ASTM B117 Salt Spray Test Service in Malaysia

TestLabs supports salt spray and salt fog corrosion testing in Malaysia for metals, coated metals, plated parts, painted panels, and related materials. Testing may be arranged to ASTM B117, IEC 60068-2-11, IEC 60068-2-52, MIL-STD-810 requirements, or a customer-specific method, subject to confirmation of the specimen, exposure duration, evaluation criteria, and reporting requirements.

Salt Spray, Salt Fog and Cyclic Corrosion Testing

Salt spray testing, also called salt fog testing, exposes prepared specimens to a controlled corrosive environment so that the relative corrosion resistance of metals and coated metals can be evaluated. It is commonly used during coating development, supplier qualification, incoming inspection, product verification, and failure investigation. The test method, exposure period, specimen preparation, evaluation criteria, and report requirements should always be agreed against the applicable product specification before the test begins.

Salt spray testing is not the same as cyclic corrosion testing. A salt spray or salt fog method generally uses a controlled fog exposure, while a cyclic corrosion method changes between defined environmental stages. The correct method depends on the customer specification, product application, and intended decision.

What Is ASTM B117 Salt Spray Testing?

ASTM B117 Salt Spray Test Chamber

ASTM B117 is titled Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus. ASTM describes the practice as covering the apparatus, procedure, and conditions required to create and maintain the salt spray test environment. ASTM also states that the practice does not prescribe the specimen type, exposure period for every product, or the interpretation of results. Those requirements must therefore be confirmed from the relevant product specification or customer test plan.

For a quotation, tell us whether the requirement is ASTM B117 only or whether the project also requires another standard, a defined exposure duration, scribe or cut preparation, a rating method, photographic records, or a particular report format. We will review the request before confirming feasibility and scope.

Test Standards and Methods

Salt spray, salt fog and corrosion test standards
Standard or method Use on this page Information to confirm before quotation
ASTM B117 Standard practice for operating salt spray (fog) apparatus to create and maintain a controlled salt spray test environment. Applicable edition, specimen preparation, exposure duration, evaluation or rating method, acceptance criteria, photographs, and report format.
IEC 60068-2-11 Use when the customer specification calls for the applicable salt mist test method. Applicable edition, specimen orientation, exposure conditions, duration, post-test inspection, and acceptance criteria.
IEC 60068-2-52 Use when the customer specification calls for the applicable cyclic salt mist method. Applicable edition, environmental cycle, number of cycles, specimen preparation, recovery, and evaluation requirements.
MIL-STD-810 Use only when the customer or procurement specification identifies the required method, version, and test procedure. Exact revision, method and procedure, exposure profile, specimen configuration, acceptance criteria, and reporting requirements.
Customer-specific method Use when the buyer provides a product specification, drawing, qualification plan, or internal test method. Full test document, sample quantity, preparation instructions, exposure conditions, rating system, and required deliverables.

Important: Listing a standard does not by itself define the exposure time, specimen type, or pass/fail result. Final conditions must be confirmed against the applicable product specification and test plan. ASTM B117 is a test practice and should not be described as a blanket product certification.

Products and industries we support

Salt spray and corrosion testing can support product development and qualification for automotive components, electronic and electrical products, maritime and marine-related products, building and construction materials, coatings and paints, plated components and parts, and telecommunication equipment. Please provide the product type, substrate or coating system, specimen dimensions, approximate weight, quantity, and required evaluation criteria so that the test plan can be reviewed before quotation.

What we review before testing

To prepare an accurate salt spray test quotation, please send the information below. If your customer specification already defines the method, exposure period, specimen preparation, rating system, or report format, attach it to the enquiry. Where a requirement is not specified, TestLabs can review the request and identify the items that need confirmation before testing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Salt Spray Testing

What is ASTM B117 salt spray testing?

ASTM B117 is the Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus. It covers the apparatus, procedure, and conditions used to create and maintain a salt spray test environment. It is used to generate relative corrosion-resistance information for metals and coated metals in a controlled chamber. The applicable specimen, exposure duration, and acceptance criteria must be confirmed from the product specification or test plan.

Does ASTM B117 specify the test duration?

ASTM B117 does not prescribe one exposure period for every product. The required duration, specimen preparation, evaluation method, and acceptance criteria should come from the applicable customer, product, or procurement specification. Include those requirements when requesting a quotation.

What products can be evaluated with a salt spray test?

Typical enquiries include coated or plated metal parts, painted panels, automotive components, marine-related products, building and construction materials, electronic and electrical products, and telecommunication equipment. Test suitability depends on the specimen and the requirements in the applicable test specification.

Is salt spray testing the same as cyclic corrosion testing?

No. Salt spray or salt fog testing generally uses a controlled fog exposure, while cyclic corrosion testing uses defined changes between environmental stages. The appropriate method depends on the customer specification, product application, and intended evaluation.

Do ASTM B117 results predict outdoor service life?

Not by themselves. ASTM notes that standalone salt spray results have seldom correlated with natural-environment performance. Results should be interpreted against the relevant product specification and acceptance criteria, and should not be presented as a universal prediction of field life.

How do I request an ASTM B117 salt spray test quotation in Malaysia?

Email sales@testlabs.my with the product type, substrate or coating, specimen dimensions, approximate weight, quantity, required standard and edition if known, exposure duration, evaluation or acceptance criteria, report requirements.

Need help defining the test plan? Send the available customer specification to sales@testlabs.my for review before testing is scheduled.
